Today was my day off. And because I had been promising Antonia for a long time that I would do something with her, I invited her to come on a tour of the “city”. I did actually pronounce the quotation marks – at least, I think I did – but Antonia probably didn't hear them.
She was really keen on the idea and got herself all dolled up. Then when we climbed on board the BBI construction site bus with my fellow workers, she looked a bit taken aback and gave me a proper thump in the ribs: “I thought we were going on a city tour of Berlin?”
I couldn't suppress a smile. “We are going on a city tour. To be precise, a round trip of a city under construction.” Because that's what our Capital City Airport is: a city for 40,000 people who will one day work at the airport – and for 22 to 25 million passengers who will take off from there to fly to their holiday destinations or important business meetings.
So we drove past the BBI station site, past the concrete factory and to finish with, paid a visit to the north-eastern rim of Schoenefeld Airport, where the biggest industrial park in the capital, the BBI Business Park, is currently taking shape.
Antonia was delighted. At least I think so. “That was the best city tour I've ever been on,” she said when it was over.
