When the snow returned to Berlin, the first thing I did was to climb to the top of the Infotower to have a proper look before starting work. And there it lay, outstretched at my feet; our construction site as white as a fairy-tale landscape, the cranes covered in snow like trees in a wood. Truly beautiful!
Then along came my workmates, one after the other – there are 1500 of us working on the site at the moment. The first excavators made deep tracks in the snow with the thick tread of their tyres and a caterpillar bulldozer ploughed its way across the site. Soon there were also footsteps leading from the snack bar where everyone stops off for a coffee first thing in the morning to every corner of the site.
In fact, there are more comings and goings on our construction site than on the ski runs where Antonia loves to spend her holidays.
At the end of the day, I always climb up the tower again to see what we have done during the day. And this time I was flabbergasted! After a whole day of making tracks to complete the BBI, there was precious little virgin snow anywhere in sight.
