While we’re dragging ourselves out of our cosy beds in the early hours every morning, even in the dark season, bats like the noctule or the brown long-eared variety still have a few more weeks to sleep – until they have used up all their winter fat, in fact.
That the bats, which are threatened with extinction and due to come out of hibernation very soon, will once again find a suitable hunting ground in our neighbourhood this year is down to the compensation measures that go hand in hand with the building of our new Capital City Airport BBI.
You see, the environmental planners have imposed some pretty far-reaching requirements on the BBI. They span landscape protection, water pollution control, brownfield site investigation and the waste disposal concept. For years now, a wide range of measures has been implemented here. One such measure is our continuing to provide the bats on the endangered species’ list with the habitat they need.
