This morning, as I opened the third little door in my advent calendar, I was greeted by the sight of a tiny light bulb. How clever, I thought, and how fitting - today being the day we switched on our new substation at the BBI construction site. This nifty new facility will supply all the power needed in just under two years when the new BBI opens.

Being an inquisitive sort of chap, I immediately set off to take a look at the new substation. It never does any harm to know exactly how things work, how the power gets to the socket and where BBI will be getting its lights, energy and heat from. The lads from Siemens, who spent a whole year building it, proudly presented their two transformers. These two crackers could easily supply 70,000 households with electricity – or a whole airport.

By the way: the substation was built by yet another regional company, one of 300 to date that have received contracts worth nearly one billion euros from the new airport. This time, the company was Siemens AG Regionaldirektion Ost, headquartered in Berlin.
