Spain of all countries! After yesterday’s World Cup match, I was on the point of unpacking my case, I can tell you. My girlfriend Antonia and I are off to Barcelona for a week’s holiday – in the home country of Iniesta, Xavi and Puyol’s – the gentlemen who defeated us so gloriously yesterday. Antonia couldn’t care less, of course, that I would now much rather be flying to Amsterdam.
I’m not going to let the disappointment spoil my holiday mood, though. Ever since the holiday season started, our two Berlin airports have been very busy. In fact, Schoenefeld and Tegel are expecting some 113,000 passengers over the coming weekend. In addition to the usual holiday destinations like Spain, Turkey and Italy, Scandinavia and Austria are also popular. Our passengers now have altogether 165 destinations in 48 countries to choose from.
I will be watching the final on Sunday from a tapas bar in Las Ramblas, but I haven’t yet decided which team I’m going to support. When all’s said and done, it’s just a game in which ability is only one of the factors that decide the final score. The team’s performance on the day, the weather, injuries, little problems with the referee all play a part in who ultimately wins the World Cup. Sigh!
