Antonia had a good laugh at my expense again at the breakfast table this morning. While tucking into my toast and aphid honeydew, I was singing “Over seven bridges”. Admittedly, Peter Maffay isn’t everyone’s favourite artist, but I like the song and anyway, for the past few days I haven’t been able to get bridges out of my mind.
Do I hear you ask why? Because today at the BBI site the last of a total of nine road bridges was concreted. Okay, okay, I know that they aren’t crossing troubled waters, but grant me a little artistic license here, folks! The bridge that has just been completed is a 50 metre prestressed concrete bridge which passengers and visitors will drive across to get to the BBI terminal.
By the way: today I deliberately measured the stretch I drive in the morning between my anthill and the BBI construction site. It came to around 30 kilometres, which is roughly the same as the entire network of roads we’re building at BBI. My lads have moved more than 600,000 cubic metres of earth and have laid 117,000 cubic metres of gravel substrate and 146,000 tons of asphalt.
Antonia is going to be amazed when she hears these numbers – and I hope it’ll wipe the smile off her face.
