Yesterday, my friend Antonia told me exactly what she thinks travelling will be like at the new Airport BBI. It was a little like this: “Check-in takes only a matter of minutes, our luggage disappears silently on the conveyor belt – and we’re set to go”. Ah, sounds good, doesn’t it? I closed my eyes and dreamt of one of my many future holidays. Sun, sand, white beaches – wonderful... “Stop!”, said Antonia, abruptly bringing me back to the present. “Before we get to the beach, there’s something else really that’s important.” She paused for effect and then smiled: “Shopping!”
For a moment my mouth gaped rather unbecomingly, but Antonia was absolutely serious. Then she explained that the people of Berlin and Brandenburg are getting an airport with great quality of stay, which is also thanks to many shops at the new airport. Well, what can I say? She’s right. Earlier this week the names of the tenants of the 69 retail and service units were announced. They include Fassbender & Rausch, an Ampelmann store and an incredible mix of international, domestic and regional brands. “I am so looking forward to it”, said Antonia – and I didn’t dare ask whether she was referring to our holiday or shopping at the airport.
