One, two, three, four! For he’s a jolly good fellow, for he’s a jolly good fellow! And so say all of us!! Thank you, thank you! Today is truly a day for celebration. Four exciting, eventful and happy years at the BBI construction site. In April 2007 I made my first public appearance as spokesman for the building site. Work had just started on the BBI Infotower.
Four years ago our new Capital Airport was just a dream, a vision far away on the distant horizon. Today, you can actually reach out and touch it. I am absolutely astounded at just how much we’ve achieved in these four years. First we dug deep and built the underground railway station. Then we aimed for the sky with the construction of the terminal. And last year we started filling the terminal with life. Or with flesh, as my friend Antonia would probably say: for her everything is like an orange, with skin around a soft, fruity centre.
People are always asking me about the highlights in my career as construction site spokesman. That’s not an easy question to answer, because I simply love every single day spent with my lads down on the building site, much to Antonia’s chagrin. If I was forced to pick just one great event, then it would probably be the topping-out ceremony on 7 May 2010. A grand celebration of the completion of the building shell for the centrepiece of the new airport.
As you can probably imagine, I can hardly wait until BBI opens on 3 June 2012. But what could be better than enjoying every single minute and day until then? Will I still be the building site mascot when the airport opens? Come now, Armin, don’t get melancholy! Today’s a day to celebrate!
