Last year, we managed to almost double the amount of belly freight handled at Berlin Airports. Belly freight is the freight that is transported on ordinary passenger flights. Our number one service for belly freight, in case you’re interested, is the Berlin to Beijing service operated by Hainan Airlines.
But that was only the beginning: in the meantime we’ve taken another great step forward. Today, we started building the new AirCargo Center Berlin, which will be the cargo centre at the new BBI airport.
The cargo hall is being built by a project subsidiary of the Bensheim-based investor Dietz AG on a 3.3-hectare plot. The development will have a hall area of 12,000 square metres and 7,000 square metres of offices. The centre is scheduled for completion in April 2012, well in time before the new BBI opens.
The initial capacity when BBI opens will be 100,000 tons of freight annually. In 2010 Tegel and Schoenefeld airports handled around 65,000 tons of freight. And the way things look, it’s just as well that the capacity of the AirCargo Center can be expanded in stages to keep pace with future growth.
