Ni hao, Bom dia, yassu! You don’t understand a word? For days I’ve been practising how to say “Hello” in lots of different languages. Whenever my work on the BER construction site allows me to take a break, I get out my set of colourful index cards and practise. You’re probably thinking I’ve planned an around-the-world trip, right? No such luck! No, it’s something even better than that: In just over two weeks’ time, visitors from all over the world will be making themselves at home here in Berlin.

The biggest and most important event in the civilian aviation industry will be taking place in the capital from 2nd to 4th October 2011: the 17th World Routes. More than 2,500 important guests from the four corners of the earth will be chatting about the aircraft in the air and on the ground and will most certainly be planning a whole range of new routes. Delegates from 300 airlines, 800 airports as well as numerous tour operators and tourism associations will be on board too.

And what has all of that got to do with me? Well, we – and that includes little old me too – will of course be presenting the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt to the ladies and gentlemen. Even before next year’s opening, they’ll be able to get an idea of what our terminal, tower, apron, runways and much, much more look like.

But until then, I’ll be practising a bit more: “Guten Tea,” er, “Tag,” I mean. In two weeks I’ll have gotten the hang of it – promise.
