I often like to compare our new airport with a small town. After all, when you consider how well our BER is going to function and perform in future, it will need to be supplied with heating, cooling, electricity and water just like a town of 20,000 inhabitants. And the disposal of wastewater will be a part of the equation too. This task will be taken care of for us at the airport by Berliner Wasserbetriebe waterworks.
They really know the ins and outs of water, that’s for sure. For the past 150 years they have been supplying the 3.7 million inhabitants of Berlin and its hinterland with drinking water and have been treating the wastewater produced by 3.9 million people. Perhaps you have already seen the Berliner Wasserbetriebe mascot, a little yellow rubber duck ¬– it’s just so sweet, the ultimate in cuteness. I could go on and on about it...
But let’s return to the airport and its wastewater. In future things will happen like this: the water will be fed through a pressure pipe from the airport directly to the Waßmannsdorf wastewater treatment works. And the amount of water will be increased gradually; we are expecting around 460,000 m³ a year by 2015. Berliner Wasserbetriebe will also be taking care of the disposal of rainwater contaminated with de-icer as they have so far done already at the Tegel and Tempelhof airports.
We have invested meticulously in the airport’s supply and disposal facilities, which includes the construction of things like drains, sewers, pressure pipes, pump stations and sand filters. Clean water is simply something that means a lot to us – just like flying!
