They’ve all left now – the 2,700 airline and airport representatives, tourism promoters and route planners that were in Berlin last weekend. We all got together at the World Routes around the Day of German Unity. The Routes is to the aviation industry what the Oscars is to the film industry.

The great thing about this year’s industry get-together was that it was held for the very first time in Berlin, making it all the more special for us Berliners. Starting with Cannes in 1995, the Routes has been staged in a different city every year. Last year it was Vancouver’s turn and finally this year it was Berlin. And we, that’s Berlin Airports, were the host.

Naturally, it was an amazing opportunity to present our new airport to industry experts from all over the world, who were astonished at how far we’ve come with BER. Now we can’t wait to see which new airlines will come to us in Berlin when the new airport opens its doors on 3 June 2012.

My colleagues from Airline Marketing were busy little bees, dealing with dozens of meetings, talking to an incredible number of airline representatives and presenting our fabulous capital and the sensational future airport – all in a kind of speed dating marathon.

Now our visitors have scattered to the winds, back to Dubai, Beijing and New York. Unfortunately, it seems they took the sun with them. Anyway, I’m already looking forward to next year when we’ll be meeting up again in Abu Dhabi.
