Today, the stage was finally set for the new airport. The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig finally approved the supplementary planning permission decision for BER.
All of us here on the construction site were delighted with the news, as it means the new airport can be opened as planned and intended.
So what does today's decision actually mean? Basically, the supplementary planning permission decision of October 2009 regulates the number of off-peak flights, i.e. flights between 10–12 p.m. and 5–6 a.m.
Unlike at Schoenefeld Airport, which has been given 24h approval, scheduled flights will not be permitted at BER from 12 p.m. to 5 a.m. On average 77 flight movements will be permitted during off-peak hours and a maximum average of 31 flight movements between 5–6 a.m. and 11–12 p.m.
This gives local residents, airlines and Berlin Airports planning security and enables Berlin and Brandenburg to be better connected to the rest of the world. The reality will be new jobs and more new companies settling in the region.
