On St. Nicholas’ Day, the day when we here in Germany find all kinds of goodies in the shoes we have cleaned and put out the night before for the white-bearded man in his large red coat, I found a letter from my dear Aunt Marta in Poland. It said she was planning to spend this Christmas with us at our anthill in Berlin. I’m delighted! It’s been so long since I saw her. Until now she has never felt bold enough to drive the 260 kilometres from Poznan to Berlin on her own.
Now, since the Polish motorway network linked up to the German motorway A12 on 30 November 2011, it’s a clear run for her from Poznan straight to our doorstep. If I know my aunt, she will really step on it and make the journey in just three hours. The new autostrada has four lanes and extends all the way to Lodz. It was officially opened by Poland’s President Bronislav Komorovski.
For us as an airport, the improved road connection to Poland is of huge importance. More than a million Polish passengers already take off and land at Berlin airports every year. With the new A1 connection, their number is sure to rise, making the BER the most important airport for western Poland.
At any rate, I am already looking forward to my Aunt Marta and her home-made cheesecake, sernik. Roll on Christmas!
