Only a few days to go now and then Father Christmas will be here again. It’s good to remember, though, that what for many people is a family day of love and goodwill is usually very much a day of work for the fire service. Advent wreaths in flames, smouldering Christmas trees and fondue pans that have caught fire – there are many reasons for fire fighters to be on their toes, especially over Christmas.

For many fire fighters on the construction site of the new airport BER, today has already been a bit like Christmas and Easter all rolled into one. That’s because the new fire station, Feuerwache Ost, was officially handed over to the Berlin Airports fire service today. “The fire service is the backbone of every airport – without it, no aircraft could take off or land,” as Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen, COO BER of Berlin Airports, said at the grand hand-over ceremony.

Feuerwache Ost will initially be responsible for fire safety on the construction site. Once the new airport opens on 3 June 2012, its main duties will be fire safety and prevention on board the aircraft and at the terminal.

Did you know, by the way, that in the event of a fire, the fire service must make its way to the ends of the runways within 180 seconds? The altogether 200 fire fighters of BER will have their work cut out for them, given the demands they face. After all, safety is priority number one in aviation. air traffic.

For now, though, we would like to wish all families and fire fighters alike a happy – and safe – Christmas!
