Für Armin wird 2012 der Knaller!

This last weekend was a real cracker! Nearly a million people saw out the old year at the biggest New Year’s party in the world, as revellers thronged the wide avenue all the way from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column at the heart of the German capital. And the party mood is set to continue as the year progresses – for example, when the new BER Airport opens on 3 June 2012.

Come to Schoenefeld today and there’s no chance of you overlooking the new airport any more. The terminal and the tower are both up and the runways are ready to for the planes to roll, but with over 6000 construction workers, architects and engineers still on the job, we still have more people employed on the BER site than ever.

Even if you can hardly tell from the outside any more, there’s still an awful lot to be done during this last stage of building. The interior of the terminal awaits final completion over the coming weeks and months, and work is currently also in full swing at the maintenance hangars of Lufthansa, airberlin and Germania. And another important aspect to bear in mind is that trial operation has now been under way for a few weeks.

Over 12,000 testers have signed up to help put the new airport through its paces shortly before it opens. All airport processes will be tested over and over again over a period of six months up to 3 June, so that the airport is ready for take-off on the big day. So all I can say now is, for me, the whole of 2012 looks like being a proper cracker!
