Closure of Tegel: With the commencement of operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Tegel Airport will be closed down

3 June - Beginning of Berlin Brandenburg Airport operations: 2012 the air traffic for the Berlin-Brandenburg region is bundled at Berlin Brandenburg Airport in Schoenefeld.

Completion of structural work on the terminal (“topping-out ceremony”), start of operations for the fire department, building for special equipment, winter services and ground traffic services

Completion of structural work on the terminal, beginning of construction work for the shell of the BBI Terminal, beginning of structural work on the south pier, expansion of the underground railway station by Deutsche Bahn, completion of structural work on the railway tunnel for the eastern railway connection, construction of the 4,000-metre-long south runway, concrete work for aircraft operation areas such as aprons and taxiways, start of construction of the DFS airport tower, topping-out ceremony for E.ON edis power stations, start of construction of the fire stations, extensive work in the area of supply and disposal

Demolition of the old north runway and closure of the gap in the A113 motorway. Completion of GAT, completion of first section of the BBI Railway Station, beginning of construction of the terminal and operational roads, beginning of construction of the new south runway and aprons, closure of Tempelhof Airport

Beginning of the rail tunnel and the subterranean railway station, beginning of construction for the utility supply lines and waste disposal, beginning of construction of the southern runway and aprons, beginning of construction of road connections, demolition of the current northern runway

Set up of the construction site: building of the construction roads, the central concrete mixing plant, the construction site areas, beginning of the relocation of lines, request for tenders for the initial construction work, preparatory works for the runway connections to the northern BBI runway

On 16 March, the German Federal Administrative Court authorised the expansion of Schoenefeld Airport, giving the green light for BBI, the new airport for the German capital. No appeal can be filed against this high court ruling.

Continued preparation for construction (building ground clearing)

Conclusion of resettlement: Even before the commencement of BBI construction work the residents are resettled in their new homes and apartments in Koenigs Wusterhausen, Selchow and Groß Ziethen

Construction permit: After extensive checks and considerations the authorities decide about the BBI airport project (Planning Stipulation Decision)

Beginning of preparation for construction (resettlement, archaeological investigations)

Citizen participation 2: Hearings with private objections and so-called institutions of public concerns (authorities, associations, churches, etc.)

Citizen participation 1: Exhibition of the planning documents in the neighboring communities of Schoenefeld Airport

Agreement on resettlement: Signatures on the contracts for socially-tolerable resettlement of Diepensee and partial resettlement of Selchow

Application for permit: The Flughafen Berlin-Schoenefeld GmbH (FBS) submits the Planning Stipulation Application after only two-and-a-half years of planning

Consensus decision by the partners Berlin, Brandenburg and federal government: BBI, the international airport for Berlin and Brandenburg, will be built in Schoenefeld. Tegel and Tempelhof will then be closed
