The countdown is on. In a good three weeks' time, the starting whistle will blow for the 2nd Airport Run. I'm feeling fitter than I have for a long time because I've been training hard over the past few months, doing tempo runs, sprints and long-distance runs. Even the little paunch of affluence I had acquired has now disappeared. I can hardly wait to run my first half-marathon. And the best thing about it is that it goes right round the BBI construction site. That means I have a clear advantage. You see, my legs may be short, but when it comes to the BBI, I know every inch of ground.

We set out in Berlin, pass Schoenefeld Airport, cut across the BBI site and continue on through the villages of Rotberg, Selchow and Waßmannsdorf. When we reach the finishing line at Schoenefeld Airport, we will have covered exactly 21.0975 kilometres. I really want to complete the course – not only because all the hard work will be rewarded with live music, a raffle and plenty of food and drink at the finish, but also because I have made it my own personal mission! I have no idea how I will manage to crawl around the site the following day. If necessary, my lads will just have to manage without me for a change.
