There are some things in the life of a man, ant man or otherwise, that he will never forget. His first hangover after a long night on the tiles is probably up there on the list with his first kiss and what followed. And for me, the first AirportRun is also in that category.

There was a time when I firmly believed that people who voluntarily crawled more than one kilometre at a stretch should either have a damn good reason for doing so or simply couldn't be entirely normal.

And then this: more than 4,000 visitors and runners turned up for the AirportRun that goes right round the BBI construction site. The atmosphere all along the route reminded me of the World Cup, the rhythmic clapping and the trilling of whistles drove me on and on towards the finishing line. It was … fantastic!

This coming Sunday, 29 June, it's time for the next one. The 3rd AirportRun for runners and power walkers is now a fixture in the sports calendar. But this time there's not just the half-marathon distance, but also the shorter race over ten kilometres for the less ambitious.

The route once again circles the BBI construction site, which is hardly recognisable as the same place since so much has happened here over the past year. We're expecting thousands of visitors again and I am really looking forward to it. I'll be running!
