I’m actually away with the BBI Infobus on our summer tour of Brandenburg until 12 September, talking to people all over the area about the opportunities and potential of the biggest project for the future of our capital city region. That is, of course, the new Capital City Airport BBI. But I do make the occasional trip back to the construction site in between, as I did yesterday, in fact, for our big staff party. Now that was fun! It got going at 4pm in a big marquee by the BBI Infotower and lots of familiar faces turned up. Some of them were former workmates, people who have already retired, for instance, and didn’t want to miss the opportunity to drop by and take another look at the site.

I was a bit disappointed that my ant suggestions were not taken seriously again this year as far as the buffet was concerned. I would have loved some dung beetles, caterpillars and flies, or at the very least the odd invertebrate, like a few spiders, but instead there were just mushrooms from one of those huge frying pans, plates of cheese and fruit, and fried sausages. Well, what can I say? Good job I’m an omnivore! There were a couple of official speeches, of course. Mr Körtgen, who will be the new technical director at the BBI from 1 September, said a few words, as did our boss, Dr Rainer Schwarz. He thanked us for the work we were doing and I felt as though he were talking to me personally. The high point of the party was naturally Markus’ performance. Remember him? He’s the one with the Maserati that does 210 km/h, who always puts his foot down. It was his birthday yesterday, so we all sang for him. He returned the compliment with a rendition of “Ich will Spaß”, which of course means “I want fun”, and everyone joined in. All I can say is, I had fun – and lots of it. >
