There are days when my friend Antonia takes one look at me when I come back from the site – covered in dust and dirt from my feelers to my boots – and pushes me straight under the shower. And there are days when I put on a spanking-clean new overall in the morning and return in the evening with it unsullied by even the slightest speck of dirt. Like yesterday. Yesterday, we had a grand meeting at the Red Town Hall. Except for me, nobody else was wearing overalls: everyone was looking smart in a suit: the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, the Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzeck, the Federal Minister for Transport, Wolfgang Tiefensee, numerous representatives from the banks and my boss, Dr. Rainer Schwarz, was there too. The occasion was the announcement of yet another piece of good news along the path to the new BBI airport.
A consortium of seven German banks together with the European Investment Bank EIB have agreed to fund the new BBI. The loan contracts for €2.4 billion have been finalized, which secures the funding for all further construction stages until the new airport officially opens in October 2011. “This is a truly historic day that fully deserves its place in the timeline of key decisions for the construction for the BBI”, said my boss, Dr. Rainer Schwarz.
