Everyone’s talking about the crisis: the financial crisis, the economic crisis, the car crisis – and my beloved Antonia even mentioned “relationship crisis” last night. Yup – I’m fed up and I’ve had enough. Thankfully, my boss, Dr. Rainer Schwarz, isn’t taking too pessimistic a view of things. He believes that the current situation has its good aspects and says: “The Berlin market has remained robust, even in the crisis.” And that means that we are losing fewer passengers than other major German airports.
So it’s good to hear that Berlin Airports is raising the initial capacity of the BBI to 27 million passengers. Until now, the airport was to be built to handle a capacity of between 22 and 25 million passengers a year. I think this is a wise decision, because the airports in Berlin already handle more than 21 million passengers a year. Of course, this announcement is big news for the building site, because more passengers mean more buildings and more space.
I immediately rounded up my lads and gave them their instructions. First, we have to extend the apron and the South Pier to accommodate more airplanes. We are putting a new intermediate level in the South Pier to make it easier for passengers to disembark and transfer to connecting flights. A third taxiway in front of the main pier is being planned. But wait a moment – I’m going into too much detail. My lads have got everything under control.
