I must admit, I’m feeling slightly melancholy. Letting go is never easy, especially with four ant hands. But I’m still proud. Last Friday, we officially handed over the structural framework of the underground BBI railway station to Deutsche Bahn.
We’ve been working on the structural framework for two years. In 2008, i.e. right in the middle of the main construction period, around 400 of my boys were working on the construction – pottering about, hammering and sweating. In the first year, i.e. 2007, their golden hands cast 236 concrete piles up to 20 metres deep in the fine Mark Brandenburg sand. After all, we needed a proper foundation.
Now Deutsche Bahn is taking over the interior works on the railway station and constructing the track systems, platforms and signalling equipment. The underground railway station forms the foundation for the heart of BBI, the terminal.
Rail passengers will be able to reach the underground terminal station from the main railway station in just 20 minutes and arrive at the terminal building via escalators and lifts in no time at all.
