School started again last week in Brandenburg and Berlin and I thought I could just stroll into a classroom and say a few words about the BBI construction site. How wrong I was. “Please don’t interrupt us. Lisa is just telling us about the best thing that happened in her summer holidays,” the teacher said, turning me down politely, but firmly. What could I do but sit down in the circle with the children and keep as quiet as a mouse?
Yet I had more than one reason to visit the Astrid Lindgren primary school in Mahlow. After all, Berlin Airports has fitted out the classrooms with new soundproof windows and fans – right on time for the end of the school holidays. Now it really is quiet in the rooms. I tested it. I secretly slipped into an empty room, sat down on a bench and pretended…
By the way: the Wilhelm Busch primary school in Blankenfelde also got new soundproof windows at the start of the new school year. Berlin Airports paid a hefty 550,000 euros for both schools – money well invested, I’d say. Now there’s nothing to stop the kids concentrating on their lessons. Nothing, that is, expect one story or another about a fascinating holiday experience that has to be told at the beginning of term.
