You know how it is: the aircraft has barely touched down and made its way its parking position, and already things start getting hectic. No one wants to stay on board any longer and so everyone is busy grabbing his or her hand luggage. The holiday is over and a long queue of passengers jostles its way to the exit.

But all the jostling to get away turns out to be pretty pointless because you all end up back together at the very latest in the baggage reclaim area. Now here it really is important to get the luggage quickly and safely to the passengers because when loved ones are waiting outside, obviously no one wants to wait a moment longer than necessary at the carousel.

This means baggage handling is also a very important aspect for the new Capital City Airport BBI, too. Although the topping-out ceremony for the terminal won’t be held until the spring, the Mönchengladbach firm Vanderlande is already beginning to install this very complex system, after taking part in a Europe-wide tender and winning the contract.

There’s quite a lot to do between check-in and the baggage reclaim area, considering the more than 9000 metres of conveyor belt that have to be set up and co-ordinated so that 6000 pieces of luggage can ultimately be moved per hour. As you can see, you really cannot start early enough if you want to make sure that no one has to wait in the end.
