The road network at the new BBI airport is 90 per cent complete today, but until recently one important thing was still missing. That’s right, the roads had no names. Now we’ve taken care of that, too, even though deciding what to call them was no easy job. To start with, what kind of names should we choose? Those of native ornamental plants, such as gladioli, tulips and hydrangeas, have long been in use in other places, as have those of fairy-tale characters. Then again, Snow White Street or Tulip Lane would seem a bit out of place at an airport, wouldn’t they?

Far more fitting are the names – chiefly of aviation pioneers – which have now been allocated to the BBI’s eight roads and one square. The main square right in front of the terminal will, like the airport itself, be named after former Berlin Mayor and German Chancellor Willy Brandt. Melli-Beese-Ring will take the name of the first female German aeroplane pilot (1886-1925); Hugo-Junkers-Ring, that of the German engineer, professor, research scientist and entrepreneur (1859-1935), whose work was fundamental to the development of aircraft design, and Elly-Beinhorn-Ring commemorates “Germany’s boldest woman” and aviator of the 20th century (1907-2007). The remaining thoroughfares (Hugo-Eckener-Allee, Brunolf-Baade-Straße, Margarete-von-Etzdorf-Straße, August-Heinrich-Euler-Straße and Georg-Wulf-Straße) also commemorate important figures from the history of German aviation.
