The new airport BBI will be an important hub for passenger traffic, as I recently explained to my friend Antonia. “But it will be just as important for air freight”, I added.

And there’s a simple reason for that: BBI expects to handle a vast volume of air freight and the only way to do this is by using the most advanced, efficient technology. Practically everything will be automatic and both the technology and the people using it will have to work to a highly efficient standard.

That’s why the real estate investment company Dietz AG is building an air freight centre right next to the terminal in the Airport City, where companies that are involved in aviation will be located.

Let me give you a few figures to give you an idea of the new centre: the capacity of the new centre is around 60,000 tons of air freight per year. The centre will primarily handle belly freight, which is transported on regular scheduled passenger flights. Belly freight is an important segment: it already accounts for more than 50 per cent of the total freight volume handled.

The new freight centre will have offices for customs and excise as well as all air freight forwarding companies and agents, express services like UPS and FedEX, all of whom will be working to ensure that BBI’s air freight is handled fast, safely and efficiently.
