We’re nearly there: in just under a year’s time the new BBI Airport – err, I mean, of course, Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt – will be opening. With the start of the countdown yesterday, we’ve now officially said our farewells to the BBI abbreviation. Sniff! BBI was, after all, merely a working title during the new airport’s planning and construction phase. So the new airport is now officially called Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt, and BER is its IATA code. Unfortunately, BBI has already been assigned to Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar, India. The TXL code for Tegel and SXF for Schönefeld will likewise both be taking a well-deserved retirement.
If you want to get an idea of what the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport is like, I always recommend you take a tour of the construction site. Or visit Tegel Airport! Since yesterday, there is a twelve metre high installation located in the inner-ring car park displaying views of the new airport. It’s pretty huge, and you really get the impression you’re standing in front of the real airport. Looks really cool.
And I have another piece of news for you too. After all, all good things come in threes. The new airport is getting a new look. We’re saying goodbye to the blue that we’ve been using up till now. Red is the airport’s new colour. Though it won’t be just any kind of red: it’s a vibrant, radiant scarlet combined with a deep, classic crimson. The new colour will be used for the airport signage as well as in all materials used for communications, information and promotional purposes.
So does that mean I’ll be getting the red carpet treatment from now on? Well, I haven’t a clue, but what I do know for sure is that Tegel’s and Schönefeld’s days are numbered. The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport is almost within reach.
