Admittedly, it was just one old and also rather dusty suitcase – but it was still a very special piece of luggage! That’s because yesterday was a première at the new BER Airport, when the very first case was checked in at the counter and transported on the new baggage conveyor.
At the check-in première, Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, played a very convincing first “passenger”. After lifting the case onto the conveyor belt with a flourish, he followed its progress with his gaze until it had disappeared from sight.
Klaus Wowereit will not be the only person to test the procedure, though. The people of Berlin and Brandenburg are also invited to come along to the new BER Airport and put it through its paces in the weeks and months before it opens on 3 June 2012. Anyone interested in becoming a tester can register on the Internet at http://ber.berlin-airport.de.
