Neighbours for the BER: Ground-breaking Ceremony for the Berlin Air Show, ILA

We still have a bit more than a year to go till the next Berlin Air Show, the ILA, but like last year’s, it is likely to attract about 250,000 aviation fans keen to be where the representatives of international aerospace companies negotiate new business deals and present their aircraft to the public – both in the air and on the ground.

Next year, however, just arriving will be part of the excitement – because visitors from outside Berlin will fly into the city via the new BER Airport, which will be opening on 3 June 2012, just a few weeks before the air show itself.

The new airport is only a few minutes away from the exhibition site, by the way, which is in the immediate vicinity. The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the Berlin ExpoCenter Airport was held yesterday on the edge of the little village of Selchow. So from now until next year, when the ILA finally takes off, it looks like planners, architects and construction workers will be dominating the scene on the 250,000m2 site.

According to the present schedule, the administration building will be ready for occupation by the end of April 2012. The 2012 ILA will take place from 11 to 16 September. As ever, the three first days of the ILA will be reserved exclusively for trade visitors. But there will also be ample opportunity for the people of Berlin and Brandenburger to visit the show. In face, they can look forward to a sensational flight programme over the following weekend, when the ILA is also open to the general public.
