These past weeks, whenever I’m at work I always feel reminded of home. That’s because at first glance the building site looks like an ants’ nest: it’s just as lively, just as busy, as my family home. At the moment we’ve got more than 4,000 building workers, engineers and architects, all working away to get the airport finished.
So what are we working on at the moment? Well, in these last few weeks we’ve been busy working on the interior: we’re laying flooring in the terminal, installing counters in the check-in area, building the maintenance hangars for Lufthansa, airberlin and Germania. These are the things keeping us on our toes at present.
There’s always some section being completed somewhere on the site and a premiere being celebrated. In the last few days, for example, there was the station. The electronic announcement boards were put up some time ago, even though they kept wrapped in protective cardboard. Now the first S-Bahn local train has pulled up at one of the platforms underneath the terminal. Once the airport opens, passengers will be able to get from the station to the check-in area in under five minutes.
