Berlin Airports: the best connections for the German capital region
Berlin Airports secures the air traffic infrastructure for the Berlin and Brandenburg region through the airports Schoenefeld and Tegel. From 2012, all air traffic will be concentrated on the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The first major step towards this goal was the closure of Tempelhof Airport on 30 October 2008. The closure of Tegel Airport is due to follow in 2012 when BER opens.
In 2010, Berlin Airports’ passenger figures broke all previous records. For the first time, the company reported more than 22 million passengers in a single year. With this year-on-year increase of 6.4 per cent, Berlin Airports has for the eighth time in succession performed better than the average of international commercial airports in Germany (around plus five per cent compared with 2009; source: German Airport Association (ADV). This result not only secures Berlin Airports’ good third place in the overall ranking of German commercial airports, it also sees its market share stabilise at just under 12 per cent.
Last year, the domestic route most frequently flown by passengers from Berlin was the connection to Munich (1,816,388 passengers; +1.4 per cent); within Europe it was London (1,282,294 passengers). For Berlin Airports, London has been the biggest growth market in the past year (+229,454 passengers; +21.8 per cent). In long-haul international services, the most popular destination in 2010 was New York route (208,394 passengers).
Berlin has never been better connected with the rest of the world than it is today. In 2010, 88 airlines flew to and from Berlin’s airports, with a particular focus on the inner-European network. From Berlin, in 2010 there were flights to 171 destinations in more than 50 countries, of which 127 are in Europe. The choice of long-haul services from Berlin is also constantly rising, and currently features non-stop services from Tegel to New York, Bangkok, Phuket, Beijing and Doha, the capital of Qatar. As from November 2010, Air Berlin has operated services from Berlin to Dubai, Miami and Mombasa. From the beginning of the 2011 summer flight schedule, Air Berlin will be offering a non-stop service to New York.
Close cooperations between Berlin Airports and tour operators, airlines, transport companies and tourism associations help to continually increase the number of services to and from Berlin. More destinations in the Middle and Far East are set to follow in the near future.
