The culture and history of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second biggest city, have been shaped by its strategically favourable location. For centuries the seaport in the north of the country was an interface between north-south and east-west transportation routes (the Via Egnatia). Places of interest like the Bezesteni (a covered market with six domes), Turkish baths (hamams), numerous mosques, and the White Tower (the city’s famous landmark) tell of the Ottoman influence on the town. Whereas the imperial palace, Arch of Galerius and Rotunda bear witness to the Roman era.
Not far from Thessaloniki is the “three-fingered” peninsula Chalkidiki with its varied nature and landscape, numerous beaches, and turquoise-green sea that invite visitors to relax, explore and go for a swim.
