North Data Centre awarded the "Blue Angel" environmental certificate09.06.2015
Energy-efficient operation of the North Data Centre at Schönefeld Airport was awarded the "Blue Angel" certificate on 7 May 2015.
The two redundant North and South Data Centres at Schönefeld Airport are home to the IT infrastructure of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH as well as network and server infrastructures for external customers and service-providers such as airlines, ground handling services and public authorities. Full availability of the data centre services is indispensable for smooth operations at Schönefeld Airport. This is associated with high energy requirements for power supply and cooling. A significant share of energy requirements at the airport company is accounted for by operation of the two data centres. Expansion of the North Data Centre for commissioning BER was therefore used in order to optimise its future energy consumption. By using more energy-efficient technologies, it was possible to reduce the energy requirements and operating costs.
The "Blue Angel" certificate for data centres is an independent quality mark which is recognised world-wide. It is awarded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
