Berlin becomes biggest
On Wednesday, 10 February 2016, Kenny Jacobs, Chief Marketing Officer at Ryanair, announced the addition of 13 new routes and the stationing of four more aircraft at Schönefeld for the 2016/2017 winter flight schedule. This will make the airport the biggest Ryanair base in Germany. Just recently in October 2015, the Irish low fares airline opened a base with five aircraft at Berlin Schönefeld Airport.
The 13 new routes will connect Berlin Schönefeld to destinations including the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote. Furthermore, with the flights to Lisbon, Sofia, and Budapest, three connections to European capitals will be added. Additionally, some of the existing connections will also be scaled up. Due to these changes, a total of 39 destinations throughout Europe will be offered from October 2016.
The nine Boeing 737-800 aircraft will then carry 4.7 million passengers per year, up from the current 3.5 million. As a result, the Irish carrier’s base now secures 3,500 jobs in the region.
