Catania, Mount Etna's black daughter
Catania, the second-largest city in Sicily, lies at the base of Mount Etna. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the volcano is one of Europe's largest and most active. As many buildings are built using black lava rock, this Baroque-style city on the Mediterranean is also referred to as Mount Etna’s black daughter. Largely black and white, the building colours lend Catania a magical elegance.
No visit to Catania would be complete without a trip to Mount Etna. Along numerous trails, hikers can immerse themselves in the natural mountain landscape, discovering solidified lava flows and craters as well as dense forests and grottoes. Around 70 kilometres of coastline make it ideal for relaxing and hanging out. The Mediterranean climate, non-stop sunshine and long sandy beaches exude a magical attraction for beach-lovers and water sports enthusiasts alike.
