Leeds – former industrial city with great recreational opportunities
The landscape of the British city of Leeds is full of contrasts. Industrial architecture, which tells the story of the city’s economic history in the last century (the cloth trade, textile industry and engineering made the city rich), modern buildings with glass facades and numerous green spaces and parks invite visitors to explore and relax. The Leeds Art Gallery, the Royal Armouries Museum (one of the world’s oldest museums) and the Armley Mills Industrial Museum (located in a former wool mill and which vividly recounts the city’s industrial heritage) are a must for all visitors. Situated on the River Aire, the ruins of 12th century Kirkstall Abbey, also offer another rewarding place of interest. The Gateway to North England, Leeds is located just a stone’s throw from the national parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. The surrounding towns, such as the market town of Huddersfield, Harrogate or the up-and-coming City of Culture, Bradford, are great destinations for a brief excursion.
Leeds Bradford International Airport lies about 16 kilometres northwest of the city. It is well served by public transport (bus and rail) as well as the local road network.
