Berlin Airports today awarded yet another major contract for the Capital Airport BBI. The 277 million euro contract to construct the runway, taxiway and apron system was today awarded to the group of tenderers EUROVIA/von der Wettern in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. "We were able to place the second-largest contract for BBI on the market on time and more importantly within budget. Construction work will commence as early as September 2007," said Thomas Weyer, BBI/Technical Director of Berlin Airports.
Approximately 8.5 million cubic metres of soil must be moved to complete the approx. 1.4 million square metre aviation surfaces. The contract also involves constructing an underground refuelling system for aircraft. BBI is scheduled to open in time for the 2011 winter flight schedule.
