Berlin Airports is pleased to report an especially large number of passengers travelling before Christmas and around New Year.

“Today, Friday, is one of the peak travel days in the entire year with some 460 flights handled at Tegel and 160 takeoffs and landings in Schoenefeld,” says Dr Rainer Schwarz, Berlin Airports’ CEO. “Berlin Airports offer something for every taste, including sunshine destinations such as the Caribbean, Kenya, Bangkok and the Canary Islands as well as winter sports resorts, for instance in the Alps.”

Heading for snow

For everyone whose winter at home is simply not white enough, there are numerous destinations this year that hold the promise of snow. Since December, TUIfly has been operating a direct twice-weekly service from Berlin-Tegel to Innsbruck in the Austrian Alps. From there, passengers can choose between nine ski areas within easy reach – which means this connection is ideal for short breaks in the snow. Other snow destinations are Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Geneva.

And for skiers unwilling to miss out on city life while enjoying a holiday in the snow, Lyon is the perfect destination. That’s because the UNESCO World Heritage City close to the Alps is famous not only for its culinary scene, but is also situated close to a number of ski areas. Easyjet has been flying once a day to Lyon from Berlin-Schoenefeld since the end of October.

Sunshine assured

But sunseekers keen to flee the German winter also have every reason to be pleased because the Berlin Airports flight plan offers several long-haul destinations complete with a sunshine guarantee, such as Bangkok, Mombasa in Kenya, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Varadero on Cuba. The Canary Islands and Egypt, however, still remain the most popular end-of-year travel destinations with the people of Berlin and Brandenburg.

City trips in winter

Cities like London, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona as well as New York and Doha are all inviting destinations for a spot of Christmas shopping.
