Master Plan signed for Airport Gateway Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI)

10.01.2008
Joint master plan for the development of the BBI’s close environs
Today,Thursday, Senator for Urban Development Ingeborg Junge-Reyer for the State of Berlin, Mayor Dr Udo Haase for the borough of Schoenefeld, City Councillor for Construction and Urban Development Rainer Hölmer for the Treptow-Köpenick district and CEO of Berlin Airports Dr Rainer Schwarz sign the Masterplan Gateway BBI.

The construction of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport BBI is the most significant development project for the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. The BBI will give the metropolitan region not only an ultramodern airport in line with the latest aviation requirements, but also an attractive place in which to arrive in the German capital that combines highly functional and appealing design with exemplary architecture and infrastructure. A master plan is now to link this outstanding new airport development and the newly created transport connections with the surrounding area.

That is why the State of Berlin, the Treptow-Köpenick district and the borough of Schoenefeld together with Flughafen Berlin-Schoenefeld GmbH FBS have worked side by side to draw up a joint structural concept for the states of Berlin and Brandenburg with a view to initiating a concerted development project for the area surrounding the airport. With the Masterplan Gateway BBI, they plan to ensure the regulated urban and rural development of areas east of the future airport on both Schoenefeld and Berlin territory.

Based on the fundamentals laid down for the BBI, the master plan also provides for the creation of a specific character in the surrounding area that will give the location a special image and at the same time distinguish the area favourably from the environs of other international airports.

As an informal, urban planning concept with clear structures and principles, the master plan provides a general basis for long-term implementation over a period of 10 to 20 years. It also aims to ensure sustainable development opportunities for the entire region. This plan above all forms a general basis for attracting businesses and investors to the region. The co-operation partners will establish locations and uses step by step. A tripolar strategy has been agreed upon, starting with the core areas BBI terminal and Airport City, the areas of Schoenefeld providing access to the BBI (Waltersdorf-Nord and Kienberg) as well as the BBI Business Park Berlin, which will all refer to each other on development matters and adapt themselves to a common basic structure.

The Masterplan Gateway BBI creates the basis for lasting and co-ordinated co-operation between the State of Berlin, the district of Treptow-Köpenick, the borough of Schoenefeld and Flughafen Berlin-Schoenefeld GmbH so as to ensure even better integration into the surrounding area of the largest development project in the capital region, to promote positive synergies and to give the future Capital City Airport an appropriate setting.
