Schoenefeld Airport rejoices in new status of city airport with the opening of the airport motorway

In only 25 minutes from the Kudamm to Schoenefeld / Ideal motorway link for the new Capital City Airport BBI
“Today’s motorway opening has finally elevated Schoenefeld Airport to the official status of city airport for Berlin,” said Dr. Rainer Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Airports. “Our passengers can now turn off the motorway and drive straight up to the terminal – you really can’t get much closer than that! Driving time from Kudamm to Schoenefeld has been shortened to just 25 minutes. I am confident that the new motorway section will boost Schoenefeld Airport’s popularity even further.”

The final 700-metre section of the airport motorway A113 which opened today closes the last remaining gap between the Berlin city motorway A111 and the A113 at Waltersdorf/Schoenefelder Kreuz. Now people getting to and from Schoenefeld Airport have a choice of three fast travel options: either by S-Bahn local rail or by regional rail service or on the airport motorway. The completion of the motorway also means that the new Capital City Airport BBI will be fully linked to the German motorway network when it opens in 2011.

Construction work on the last section of the motorway started in December 2007. The old Schoenefeld north runway was officially closed last November and was demolished to make way for the final 700 metre stretch of motorway.
