From 2011: BBI is to become Berlin Brandenburg Airport11.12.2009
The supervisory board also voted to give the new airport the additional name of Willy Brandt.
Klaus Wowereit, governing mayor of Berlin, and Matthias Platzeck, prime minister of the State of Brandenburg, announced the decision, stating: “With this new name, the supervisory board has taken the decision to honour a great, internationally respected politician. Willy Brand, a Nobel Peace Laureate, rendered outstanding services to the Federal Republic of Germany. His achievements as the governing mayor of Berlin, foreign minister and German chancellor decisively shaped the way the world perceives Germany. The name Willy Brandt is respected and esteemed all over the world, and we believe that it is fitting that the most important project for the future of the Berlin and Brandenburg region should be named after a man of Brandt’s stature and importance.”
The name of the company that operates Schoenefeld Airport, Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld GmbH, will also change: when the new airport opens in 2011, the company will start trading under the name Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH. The international three-letter code will also change in 2011 to reflect the new status: Berlin’s airports currently use the codes TXL for Tegel and SXF for Schoenefeld. Berlin also has the superordinate city code BER, which from October 2011 will be used exclusively for the new airport.
