Innovation at BBI23.09.2010
As general contractor, Alcatel-Lucent will set up a standardised IP/MPLS network with more than 17,000 IP ports. The advantage of IP/MPLS (Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching) is that it enables fast transmission of data packets. BBI will be the first airport in Germany to have such a standardised IP/MPLS network. The new communications network will facilitate network management and cut operating costs while increasing the flexibility to respond to rapidly changing infrastructure requirements.
“The new communications and network architecture provides us with an infrastructure that can be upgraded and developed flexibly in the future as the airport grows, and enables us to meet customer expectations”, said Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen, COO of Berlin Airports.
“We are delighted to be able to equip the airport with a fail-safe, high-performance communications infrastructure to meet the highest standards. The contract for Berlin Brandenburg International Airport is a strategic milestone for us in Germany following comparable projects worldwide. It is further proof of our expertise as a reliable supplier and system integrator in this area”, explained Alf Henryk Wulf, Chairman of the Board of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany.
For Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI), Alcatel-Lucent installed the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise IP communications server for IP telephony solutions, the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router for linking individual network elements, LAN switching products from the OmniSwitch family, wireless network components, Alcatel-Lucent 5620 network management solutions for managing layer 2 and layer 3 network solutions and the Omnivista network management system for network administration and network device management. Alcatel-Lucent also assumed full responsibility for setting up the entire communications network, including comprehensive integration services provided by third-party suppliers.
About Alcatel-Lucent Besides international airports, a growing number of German airports also rely on the solutions and services provided by Alcatel-Lucent, including Munich Airport (voice, data, CCTV), Dresden Airport (voice) and the central distribution hubs of DHL in Leipzig (voice and data). Alcatel-Lucent also equipped Deutsche Bahn AG with the world’s first complete CCTV video management system based on an IP/MPLS transmission network. In 2007, the company implemented the solution for the Berlin S-Bahn.
