First quarter brings major growth in traffic

Growth in Tegel, but stagnation in Schoenefeld due to aviation tax
Berlin Airports gets 2011 off to a successful start: 5,014,894 passengers were recorded at Schoenefeld and Tegel in the first quarter, 7.8 per cent more than in the same period the previous year. Air freight volume rose sharply in the same period to 7,582 tons (+33.7 per cent).

Traffic figures for Tegel and Schoenefeld Airport vary greatly: while passenger numbers at Tegel are rising – 3,493,155 passengers were handled in the first quarter, 11.4 per cent more than in the same period the previous year – aviation tax is causing Schoenefeld Airport to stagnate: 1,521,739 passengers were recorded in the first three months of 2011, just 0.3 per cent more than in the first quarter of 2010.

Tegel recorded 1,314,319 passengers in March (+7.3 per cent) and Schoenefeld recorded 565,564 passengers (-3.8 per cent). In total, the two Berlin airports recorded 1,879,883 passengers (+3.7 per cent). The number of flight movements has risen slightly: 20,513 (+1.6 per cent). And air freight has risen sharply: 2,846 tons were transported in March (+32.3 per cent).
