Berlin Airports’ traffic report09.09.2011
In August 2011, a total of 2,142,174 passengers used Berlin’s airports. This is a 3.2 per cent increase over the same month of the previous year. In total, between January and August 15,704,839 passengers used the two airports, which marks an increase of 9.4 per cent over the same period last year.
Traffic growth at Schoenefeld and Tegel varied quite significantly:
Since the beginning of the year passenger figures at Schoenefeld Airport have been stagnating. In total, between January and August 4,695,798 passengers used the airport, which is a decrease of 1.3 per cent. The air traffic tax introduced at the beginning of the year has had a negative impact of passenger figures.
At Tegel Airport, 11,009,041 passengers have used the airport since the beginning of the year. This growth, 14.6 per cent compared with the same period last year, is mainly due to the consistent development of the route network and increases in flight frequencies to numerous destinations. The proportion of transfer passengers has almost doubled compared with the previous year.
The strong growth in air freight continued in the period from January to August, rising by 23.3 per cent to a total of 21,204 tons. However, the nationwide trend to decreasing exports is beginning to be felt at Berlin’s airports: in August flown cargo was 2,461 tons, which is a 5.1 per cent decrease compared with the same month of the previous year.
In August, Schoenefeld Airport reported 657,184 passengers. This result is a decrease of 8.3 per cent compared with the same month of the previous year. At Tegel 1,484,990 passengers used the airport in August, which is an increase of 9.3 per cent.
The number of flight movements at Schoenefeld and Tegel in August was 20,490, which is a 2.0 per cent increase over the same period last year.
