Watching while we build: Airport construction site welcomes one millionth visitor

The construction site for the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt has over the past few years become a popular sightseeing attraction in Berlin and Brandenburg. Since the end of 2007, one million visitors have taken the opportunity to see for themselves the progress being made on the building site. Today in the terminal of the new airport, Dr Manfred A. Körtgen, Director of Operations of BBI at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, was able to welcome the one millionth visitor to the construction site, Ms Emiko Konishi from Berlin-Tiergarten. As a surprise present, the special guest received an invitation for the opening event. The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will be commencing operation on 3rd June 2012.

“We are very pleased to be able to welcome the one millionth visitor to the construction site today,” says Dr Manfred A. Körtgen. “The aim of our construction site marketing was to make the work on the Berlin Brandenburg Airport as transparent as possible and to give the many people who are interested the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes. The figure of one million visitors to the building site clearly indicates the enormous interest in the construction of the new airport for the capital region,” he explains.

The construction site of the new airport was a real crowd-puller in 2011. During the past year alone, 250,000 visitors from Berlin and Brandenburg visited the Infotower or building site. 120,000 visitors took part in one of the guided bus tours, 80,000 airport fans visited the Infotower and more than 50,000 visitors from Berlin and Brandenburg came to events like “Blick ins Terminal” (“Terminal Viewing”) and the “AirportRun”. Shortly before the opening on 3rd June, the demand for guided tours of the construction site has never been higher. Only a few free seats are now available on the bus trips before the opening.

You can also find all the information about the tours at BER and about the Infotower online at The bus tours can be booked directly online or by telephone: +49 30 6091-2250 (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 3 pm).
