Berlin Brandenburg Airport: Willy Brandt welcomes the world

Presentation of the launch campaign for Berlin Brandenburg Airport / Just 65 days to go until the opening of BER / Passengers repeatedly "encounter" the namesake Willy Brandt at the new airport

During his lifetime, he travelled to more than 80 countries on all continents and was at home at airports: Willy Brandt, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, German Chancellor and Governing Mayor of Berlin. Now the honourable politician and global citizen is welcoming the world to Berlin within the scope of a launch campaign for the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt. Berlin Brandenburg Airport presented the campaign motifs and film this Friday together with Berlin's Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit, Brandenburg's Minister President Matthias Platzeck and Dr. Wolfram Hoppenstedt, Managing Director of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation.

Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin: "The new Capital Airport bears the name Willy Brandt – the name of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, German Chancellor, leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and Governing Mayor of Berlin. Brandt's politics have shaped the image of the Federal Republic of Germany for decades – his actions made him a symbol of peace and freedom in Europe. And now we are extremely delighted that the namesake of the new airport is welcoming the world to Berlin."

Matthias Platzeck, Brandenburg's Minister President: "Willy Brandt symbolises a Europe in which boundaries are overcome and peace prevails. The namesake for our new Berlin Brandenburg Airport stands for tolerance and cosmopolitanism. In this spirit, the new airport is inviting the world to the German capital region. We have achieved great things with the airport project, despite many difficulties, which is also why I am delighted with the name 'Willy Brandt'."

Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, CEO of Berlin Brandenburg Airport: "The opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt in 65 days will mark the dawn of a new era for the German capital region. The airport will connect Berlin and Brandenburg to the rest of the world. The artificial division of air space above Berlin will then finally become a thing of the past. Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt will be one of the final building blocks in bringing together what was once a divided city. We would like to use the launch campaign for the new airport – including motifs and a film – to invite the people of Berlin and Brandenburg to join us in looking forward to the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt on 3 June."

The launch campaign for the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt is entirely in honour of its namesake. It comprises four motifs on the main theme "Willy Brandt welcomes the world" as well as a short film which will be shown on ARD, rbb and 262 cinema screens in the capital region. The campaign will run throughout Berlin and Brandenburg and on numerous online portals from April to June.

Besides the launch campaign, the namesake of the new airport will maintain a permanent presence:

  • The lettering "Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt" will be visible from afar to passengers on the Departures Level of the terminal.
  • A central open space in Airport City, a 16-hectare development in front of the terminal, will invite passengers of the new airport to linger awhile. This will be called Willy Brandt Platz when the airport opens.
  • Willy Brandt will also be present in the terminal: all those interested can obtain information on the life and work of Willy Brandt at an interactive installation in the main check-in hall.

Background information

The Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH reached a decision regarding the name of the new airport on 11 December 2009, according to which, the airport would be called Berlin Brandenburg Airport and given the byname Willy Brandt.
