Traffic report for October: Berlin with strongest growth

06.11.2012

Tegel and Schoenefeld airports recorded a total of 2,417,750 passengers in October – an increase of 4.8 per cent compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The two Berlin airports have thus handled 21,483,335 passengers during the period up to October 2012. That corresponds to an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.

“With a growth in passenger volume of 5.6 per cent, Berlin continues to lead the airports in Germany. Nowhere else are passenger figures developing so positively. This means our growth is even more than twice as high as the average for all German commercial airports,” explains the airports' Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dr Rainer Schwarz.

Last month 678,562 passengers were counted at Schoenefeld Airport. This figure corresponds to a decrease of 2.2 per cent compared to October 2011. During the first ten months of the year, 6,105,846 passengers were recorded at Schoenefeld (+0.8 per cent).

At Tegel, 1,739,188 passengers were recorded in October. That is 7.8 per cent more than in the same month the previous year. From January to October, Tegel handled 15,377,489 passengers (+7.7 per cent).

With the commencement of the winter flight schedule, Germanwings has moved from Schoenefeld Airport to Tegel and will be stationed there until the BER opens. The move means that all scheduled flights offered by Lufthansa and its subsidiary Germanwings are now concentrated at one airport.

The number of flight movements at both airports in October totalled 22,663 take-offs and landings, which represents a growth of 3.5 per cent compared to the same month the previous year. In the January to October period, Tegel and Schoenefeld recorded a total of 206,144 flight movements – an increase compared to the same period the previous year (+0.5 per cent). The amount of air freight carried increased during October by 14.0 per cent to 2,952 tonnes.

The monthly data is based on preliminary figures.
