AirportRun 2013: Half-marathon at Berlin Brandenburg Airport

On Saturday, 27 April, at 7pm the starting shot will be fired for around 4,000 runners to set off along the south runway of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The four kilometre long concrete runway is the first leg in the half-marathon and 10-kilometre race across the airport grounds.

Hartmut Mehdorn, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, the airport operator, says: “We want to let people in the region actually experience BER before it opens. The 7th AirportRun offers the contestants an exclusive view of the south runway, the aprons, the German Air Traffic Control tower and the terminal from the airside.”

How to register

The AirportRun is organised by BERLIN LÄUFT. Over 2,000 participants have already registered, and like last year’s event, the organisers expect the AirportRun race to attract around 4,000 runners. Participants registering before April 21 will pay a €25 fee for the half-marathon and €15 for the 10-km race; the charges for registrations received after this date will be €30 and €18 respectively. A €5 surcharge will be charged for registrations received from abroad. Participants who do not yet have a ChampionChip for electronic time keeping can rent one for €6. Registrations can be submitted online or by telephone; late registrations will be taken on the day of the event.

Getting here and local services

The event will take place on the grounds of Berlin Brandenburg Airport in the Service Area South. This area of the airport houses the ground services buildings, the fire brigade east and the technical services headquarters. During the race a live entertainment programme on stage will be provided for visitors and there will be food and drinks on sale. Changing facilities and showers will be provided for the runners. Participants and visitors can get to the event either by car or by shuttle bus. Parking spaces are available at BER, and the shuttle bus service will run between 3pm and midnight from the S-Bahn station Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld.

Race into the sunset

The AirportRun will be taking place for the seventh time, and it is being held in the evening for the first time. The lights illuminating the south runway promise to create a very special atmosphere in the twilight. The BER terminal will also be illuminated. Participants can choose between a half-marathon over a distance of 21.0975 km, a 10-kilometre run and a 10-kilometre power walking course. In addition to prizes for the best runners in the three disciplines, the companies with the best times and the most participants will also receive prizes.
