Higher Administrative Court decision will not benefit many local residents

The airport operating company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH has received the news of the latest noise protection ruling of the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin and Brandenburg with astonishment. The judges decided today that the implementation of the noise protection programme in the day-time protection zone was unsatisfactory.

Hartmut Mehdorn, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, the airport operating company: “I very much doubt that the ruling handed down by the Higher Administrative Court really helps local residents. The airport operator’s noise protection programme offers a very high standard of protection. Much of what the court demands is impossible to implement from the point of actual noise physics. This will mean that no noise protection measures can be installed for many local residents, and that they will instead have to make do with compensation.”

The airport operator believes that the ruling does not adequately reflect the objective of the planning approval notice, which stipulated far-reaching noise protection for local residents. The airport operator intends to await the written ruling.
